This warm and timely book provides mental health professionals with a guide to the gender affirmative model, the leading approach for working with transgender and gender expansive children and their families. Using an easy-to-follow framework, readers will learn how to enable children to live as their authentic gender with the necessary social supports. The authors describe how to ease distress and build resilience within children and families, while also strengthening therapists' awareness of the complex interplay of cultural factors with gender. They also address the multifaceted psychological, social and community challenges faced by transgender and gender expansive children, as well as the potential mental health struggles that can arise as a result of bullying and more subtle forms of societal discrimination.

This book addresses challenges that TNB individuals and communities face, including ongoing legal assaults on their rights and identities, while resolutely promoting joy and thriving through affirmative practice. Chapters translate scientific knowledge into practical guidelines for therapists in multiple areas, including interdisciplinary collaborative care with other helping professionals, such as physicians and social services, as well as social and legal advocacy. They also offer guidelines for working with TNB clients across different racial and ethnic identities; religious and spiritual beliefs; and developmental stages, from gender-questioning youth to older adults.

The purpose of this book is to be a reference for clinicians and researchers in the field of transgender medicine, to provide up-to-date data and resources to properly counsel transgender and nonbinary patients about the reproductive consequences of gender-affirming interventions and their options for family-building, and to educate providers about appropriate and culturally competent reproductive health care. Effects of masculinizing and feminizing hormone therapy, as well as the fertility preservation options available, are discussed in detail for both adults and youth. In addition to these medical considerations, both psychosocial, legal and ethical considerations are highlighted for a more well-rounded presentation. A final chapter describes how to create a welcome and accepting clinical environment.

This unique handbook provides pediatric and adult endocrinologists and multidisciplinary clinical care providers a guide to transition from pediatric to adult care and an understanding of developmental and psychosocial issues of young adulthood and how they relate to healthcare and disease self-management. The handbook is divided into two parts. Part one describes transition interventions and novel strategies that can be integrated into routine care and gives practical considerations for transition processes from both the pediatric and adult perspectives, with applications across multiple endocrine conditions. Part two focuses on transition issues specific to common endocrine conditions – type 1 and type 2 diabetes, Turner syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, endocrine sequelae of childhood cancer, and transgender care – with condition-specific developmental and psychosocial issues, treatment and screening recommendations, healthcare process considerations, transition care guidelines, and key resources for more information.

Less than 30% of psychologists report familiarity with transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) clients' needs. The clients, in turn, report a lack of support in their gender journeys. There is clearly a large gap in knowledge, skill, and competence in this area of practice. This clinical guide aims to fill that gap by providing mental health practitioners with an affirmative approach that emphasizes a collaborative partnership guided by client-driven goals. An expert panel of contributors teaches readers strategies for working with a diverse array of TGNC clients, including adolescents, older adults, parents, and people of color. Client factors, including sexual orientation, religious and spiritual beliefs, and traumatic experiences, are also given special attention.

There is no one way to be transgender. Transgender and gender non-conforming people have many different ways of understanding their gender identities. Only recently have sex and gender been thought of as separate concepts, and we have learned that sex (traditionally thought of as physical or biological) is as variable as gender (traditionally thought of as social). While trans people share many common experiences, there is immense diversity within trans communities. There are an estimated 700,000 transgendered individuals in the US and 15 million worldwide. Even still, there's been a notable lack of organized information for this sizable group. Trans Bodies, Trans Selves is a revolutionary resource-a comprehensive, reader-friendly guide for transgender people, with each chapter written by transgender or genderqueer authors.--publisher.

The International Handbook on the Demography of Sexuality is the first book to specifically address the study of sexuality from a demographic perspective. Demographic research has largely paid little attention to sexuality as a whole, or sexual orientation in particular, other than in studies examining the “consequences” of sex – sexually transmitted infections or fertility. Instead, the content of this handbook explores population sexuality in order to describe the prevalence of sexual behaviors, desires, and identities, as well as their connections with other demographic outcomes. The focus is on analyzing sexuality as a demographic topic in its own right, rather than solely as a variable in studies of sexually transmitted infection or other health-related topics. In this book, both researchers with traditional demographic backgrounds, as well as those with training in other disciplines, provide an overview of the state of current research on population sexuality. These chapters provide a foundation for the development of research in the burgeoning field of the demography of sexuality.
